NJBG Events

Programs are free unless otherwise noted. Donations are gratefully accepted. For events that require reservations, or for questions, please call the NJBG office at (973) 962-9534.

All events begin or take place at the Carriage House Visitor Center unless otherwise specified.

State Park Parking Fee: On summer Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, there is a State Park parking fee of $5 for New Jersey-registered vehicles and $7 for non-New Jersey-registered vehicles. Oversized vehicles (vehicles that occupy more than one normal parking space, including vehicles with trailers, RVs, etc.) are charged double the normal rate. At all other times, parking is free.

Skylands is a carry-in, carry-out State Park facility. Please carry your trash and litter back out with you and dispose of it properly.

Remember, no pets, picnics, alcohol, balls, frisbees, nor lawn games are permitted in the Botanical Garden.

Free Guided Garden Tours - Sundays, 2 p.m., May through October. Steady rain cancels. Meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center and wear comfortable shoes.

March

  • March 3 (Sunday)
    Skylands Manor Tours. CANCELLED due to impending weather.
  • March 17 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Family Woodland Hike. Join NJBG hike leaders on an easy, child-friendly hike in the Garden's woodlands. Learn a bit about the plants, animals, and geology around you in a hike designed to fit the group. Smaller children may need to be carried. Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center. Snow/rain cancels. Free.
  • March 24 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Audubon: Gardening for Butterflies. Don Torino of the Bergen County Audubon Society offers an indoor photo presentation on creating gardens that welcome butterflies, birds, and other pollinators with perennials, annuals, and native plants. At the Carriage House Visitor Center. Free.
  • March 30 (Saturday), 10 am
    End-of-Winter Tree Walk. Join Head Landscape Designer Rich Flynn as he leads this perennial favorite. Learn the differences between trees and how to tell them apart in this special tree walk. Meet at the Carriage House; wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. Free.
  • March 31 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Rain Gardens: A Blooming Technology. Green Infrastructure, native plants and rain gardens are a vital and affordable way to improve the health and resilience of our watersheds and ecological communities -- and your backyard. Presented by Sustainability Consultant Karin LaGreca at the Carriage House Visitor Center, followed by a walk in the Botanical Garden (weather permitting). $5 for Members, $10 for Non-members.

April

Haiku in the Garden. In celebration of National Poetry Month, April 2019, Haiku Poets of the Garden State present: Haiku in the New Jersey State Botanical Garden. Look for the poems placed around the gardens during April in this installation of haiku signs, all original works by members of the Haiku Poets of the Garden State (HPGS).
  • April 7 (Sunday), 11 am-3 pm
    Skylands Manor Tours. NJBG volunteer docents lead visitors on a tour of the architecture and history of Skylands Manor. Fee: $7 adults; $5 seniors and students ages 13-18; $3 ages 6-12; free under 6.
  • April 20-22 (Saturday-Monday)
    Earth Day Weekend. Earth Day is Monday, April 22. There's no better way to celebrate than with a visit to NJBG, where you'll find the beauty of nature and a soothing respite from this busy world, plus a number of special programs. NJBG is open 8am to 8pm every day, free of charge.
  • April 20 (Saturday), 10 am-12 noon
    Volunteer Open House and Season Kickoff. NJBG volunteers do work that's meaningful, fun, and brings delight to thousands of people. Come see the many satisfying ways you can join our team. It's gardening--and so much more! Many different skills are needed and welcome; join us to learn more, meet some of our great volunteers, and start working in the Garden. Bring gloves. Meet in the Carriage House. Free.
  • April 20 (Saturday), 1 pm
    Early Spring Wildflower Walk. Spring is peeking out everywhere! Join Darlene Nowak in checking out the early bloomers in the woodlands of the Wildflower Garden! Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House. Rain or snow cancels. $5 donation.
  • April 21 (Sunday), 1 pm

  • April 28 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Audubon: Birding for Beginners. Don Torino, President of Bergen County Audubon Society will present an indoor introduction to birding and will cover bird identification, field guides, and optics. Weather permitting, a walk will follow the presentation. Bring binoculars if you have them. In the Carriage House Visitor Center. Free.

May

  • May 3 (Friday), 5:30 pm
    Plant Sale ~ Member's Preview & Reception. We thank our members each year with an invitation to the special pre-opening to our annual Plant Sale. You'll love the array of unusual specimens! NJBG members only. Free admission; NJBG members only.
  • May 4-5 (Saturday-Sunday), 10 am-4 pm
    Plant Sale. Perennials, annuals, vegetables, herbs, trees, shrubs, vines, ground covers, hanging baskets, and potted plants. Knowledgeable Master Gardeners will be on hand to offer advice, and the plants are lush and healthy. Come early for the best selection. Free admission.
  • May 4 (Saturday), 10 am
    Spring Wildflower Walk. Join Darlene Nowak and Sandy Zenkel in checking out the many delightful spring bloomers in the Wildflower Garden! Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House. Rain cancels. $5 donation.

YOUR GARDEN
Come visit often for a constantly-changing display of color and bloom sure to cheer your heart. The Botanical Garden is open every day from 8 am to 8 pm Garden admission is always free. $5 per New Jersey-registered car parking fee on summer weekends and holidays (weekends, Memorial Day to Labor Day), $7 for out-of-state registered cars. Oversized vehicles (including trailers and RVs) pay double. Weekday parking is free.

MANOR TOURS
...are offered on Sunday afternoons, March through November. Knowledgeable docents will introduce you to the architecture and history of beautiful Skylands Manor. Adults: $7; Seniors: $5; Students 13-18: $5; Children 6-12: $3; Under 6: Free. Please check the calendar for exact dates and times.

GIFT SHOP
Sunday afternoons from 12 noon-4 pm, April through December (weather permitting). Great gift ideas, shirts, books, garden supplies, and children's items. Credit cards accepted.

HIKE & BIKE
Always a pleasure on the Garden's many safe and beautiful hiking & biking trails.

FAMILY WOODLAND WALK
Our easy, child-friendly walks one Sunday afternoon each month are a great way to explore nature. Free.

VOLUNTEER IN THE GARDEN
NJBG volunteers help maintain the gardens, give tours, and offer many other public services. To volunteer, inquire at the office or call (973) 962-9534. We'd love to have you!

PLEASE REMEMBER...
