Programs are free unless otherwise noted. Donations are gratefully accepted. For events that require reservations, or for questions, please call the NJBG office at (973) 962-9534.

All events begin or take place at the Carriage House Visitor Center unless otherwise specified.

Skylands is a carry-in, carry-out State Park facility. Please carry your trash and litter back out with you and dispose of it properly.

Remember, no pets, picnics, alcohol, balls, frisbees, nor lawn games are permitted in the Botanical Garden.


Late Summer 2019

Free Guided Garden Tours - Sundays, 2 p.m., May through October. Steady rain cancels. Meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center and wear comfortable shoes.

State Park Parking Fee: On summer Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, there is a State Park parking fee of $5 for New Jersey-registered vehicles and $7 for non-New Jersey-registered vehicles. Oversized vehicles (vehicles that occupy more than one normal parking space, including vehicles with trailers, RVs, etc.) are charged double the normal rate. At all other times, parking is free.

August

  • August 18 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Family Woodland Hike. An easy, child-friendly hike in the Garden's woodlands, where you'll learn a bit about the plants and animals around you in a hike designed to fit the group. Smaller children may need to be carried. Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center. Rain cancels. Free.
  • August 23 (Friday), 6:30 pm
    Concert: From the Met to Broadway. Soprano Justyna Giermola and baritone James Michael offer an evening of Opera arias and Broadway show tunes, everything from Mozart to Gershwin. Bring a lawn chair; concert moves to the Carriage House in bad weather. $5 donation requested.

  • August 24 (Saturday), 10 am
    Wildflower Walk. Join Darlene Nowak in checking out the many delightful flowers and ferns in the shady, wooded Wildflower Garden! Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House. Rain cancels. $5 fee; children under 12 free.

September

  • September 7 (Saturday), 1 pm
    Fall Wildflower Walk. Join the Wildflower Team to check out the magical sights and sounds of fall in the woodlands of the Wildflower Garden! Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House. Rain cancels. $5 fee; children under 12 free.
  • September 8 (Sunday), 11 am-3 pm
    Skylands Manor Tours. NJBG volunteer docents lead visitors on a tour of the architecture and history of Skylands Manor. Fee: $7 adults; $5 seniors and students ages 13-18; $3 ages 6-12; free under 6.
  • September 11 (Wednesday), 12 noon
    Volunteer Potluck. NJBG volunteers are invited to our annual get-together to celebrate another great season in the Garden. Bring a bowl of something tasty to share, and come meet your fellow volunteers. Free, but please call the office to register.
  • September 15 (Sunday), 1 pm

    Concert: Carlos Pavan. To celebrate Spanish Heritage Month, New York-based composer/guitarist Carlos Pavan will present an afternoon of brilliant guitar music, skillfully blending Argentine rhythms with classical and jazz concepts. In the Carriage House. (Visit the Carlos Pavan website [opens in new window].) $10/members, $15/non-members. Available at the door.

  • September 22 (Sunday), 10 am
    Audubon: First Day of Autumn Nature Walk. Bergen County Audubon Society's Don Torino will lead a walk through the gardens and fields looking for and identifying the migrating birds and butterflies that visit the NJBG. We'll also discuss the many important trees, shrubs, and plants that provide much needed food and cover during migration. Meet at the Carriage House. Free.
    Presented by the Bergen County Audubon Society.

  • October 12 (Saturday), 1 pm
    Grow! Pick! Eat! - Children's Workshop. Now that the growing season is waning -- what to do with all those vegetables and herbs? Come make some simple and nutritious snacks/meals using the summer's best veggies. Learn about growing and what you want to plant next year, plus take home samples and recipes. In the Carriage House. Ages 6 - 16; children under 12 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. $10 members, $15 non-members. Reservations required at (973)962-9534; sorry, no walk-ins.
  • October 13 (Sunday), 11 am-3 pm
    Skylands Manor Tours. NJBG volunteer docents lead visitors on a tour of the architecture and history of Skylands Manor. Fee: $7 adults; $5 seniors and students ages 13-18; $3 ages 6-12; free under 6.
  • October 19 (Saturday), 10 am-5 pm
    Harvest Fest. Hayrides and pumpkin painting are just the start of a fun-filled family weekend. There'll be games, face painting, applesauce making, booths, exhibits, and many free activities for the youngsters. Enjoy the Beer Garden, tasty food, all-day music and dancing, an autumn Plant Sale, free garden tours, lots of great photo ops, and much more! Free admission. Parking: $5/car.

Holiday Open House - Fantasy!: December 5-8, 2019

  • December 5-December 8 (Thursday-Sunday)
    Holiday Open House at Skylands Manor. The Manor will be decorated floor to ceiling for "Fantasy!" to celebrate the sparkle and spirit of the magical season. It's a warm and welcoming start to the holiday season with a totally different look every year! Gift Shop and Holiday Café, too.
  • December 5-December 8 (Thursday-Sunday), 10 am-4 pm
    Holiday Open House - Daytime Tours. Enjoy a self-guided tour of the splendid decorations at your own pace. No baby strollers allowed in the Manor. Last ticket sold at 4 pm. $10/adults; $8/seniors; $5/children 6-12; under 6 free.
  • December 5 & December 6 (Thursday & Friday), 10 am-4 pm
    Group Tours. Bring your group to enjoy this holiday delight together. Please call (973) 962-9534 for details.
  • December 7 (Saturday), 6 pm-8 pm
    Holiday Open House - Evening Reception. The Manor will be yours for a leisurely stroll with champagne, light refreshments and valet parking. Reservations required. $45/members; $50/guests and non-members. Individual, senior and student members may buy 1 ticket for any evening at the special member price, Family and other member categories may buy 2 tickets at the special member price.     Summer Concerts

      Another great lineup this year! Join us on Friday nights at 6:30 pm on the Concert Lawn (concerts moved indoors in inclement weather). Bring a lawn chair; no alcohol permitted on state property. $5 donation requested.

    YOUR GARDEN
    Come visit often for a constantly-changing display of color and bloom sure to cheer your heart. The Botanical Garden is open every day from 8 am to 8 pm Garden admission is always free. $5 per New Jersey-registered car parking fee on summer weekends and holidays (weekends, Memorial Day to Labor Day), $7 for out-of-state registered cars. Oversized vehicles (including trailers and RVs) pay double. Weekday parking is free.

    MANOR TOURS
    ...are offered on Sunday afternoons, March through November. Knowledgeable docents will introduce you to the architecture and history of beautiful Skylands Manor. Adults: $7; Seniors: $5; Students 13-18: $5; Children 6-12: $3; Under 6: Free. Please check the calendar for exact dates and times.

    GIFT SHOP
    Sunday afternoons from 12 noon-4 pm, April through December (weather permitting). Great gift ideas, shirts, books, garden supplies, and children's items. Credit cards accepted.

    HIKE & BIKE
    Always a pleasure on the Garden's many safe and beautiful hiking & biking trails.

    FAMILY WOODLAND WALK
    Our easy, child-friendly walks one Sunday afternoon each month are a great way to explore nature. Free.

    VOLUNTEER IN THE GARDEN
    NJBG volunteers help maintain the gardens, give tours, and offer many other public services. To volunteer, inquire at the office or call (973) 962-9534. We'd love to have you!
