NJBG Events

Programs are free unless otherwise noted. Donations are gratefully accepted. For events that require reservations, or for questions, please call the NJBG office at (973) 962-9534.

All events begin or take place at the Carriage House Visitor Center unless otherwise specified.

State Park Parking Fee: On summer Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, there is a State Park parking fee of $5 for New Jersey-registered vehicles and $7 for non-New Jersey-registered vehicles. Oversized vehicles (vehicles that occupy more than one normal parking space, including vehicles with trailers, RVs, etc.) are charged double the normal rate. At all other times, parking is free.

Skylands is a carry-in, carry-out State Park facility. Please carry your trash and litter back out with you and dispose of it properly.

Remember, no pets, picnics, alcohol, balls, frisbees, nor lawn games are permitted in the Botanical Garden.

  • April 11 (Saturday), 12 noon-4 pm
    Volunteer Lunch (By Invitation Only). Our special Thank You to our volunteers. By Invitation Only.
  • April 12 (Sunday), 11 am-3 pm
    Skylands Manor Tours. Historic tours guided by knowledgeable NJBG docents. The last tour begins at 3 pm. Manor House tour dates are subject to change; please check back. Adults: $7; Seniors: $5; Students 13-18: $5; Children 6-12: $3; Under 6: Free.
  • April 12 (Sunday), 1 pm
    The Right-Size Flower Garden. Gorgeous, low-maintenance gardens are no accident, and it's important to build a garden that fits your lifestyle. Learn proven design tricks for sensational gardens that will be the talk of the neighborhood. Topics include selecting great plants, incorporating focal points, vertical interest, sustainable practices, natural repellents, the how's and when's of using fertilizer, and more. Nataionally known speaker and author Kerry Mendez has over 25 years of experience and is a 'passionate perennialist' who enjoys mixing humor with practical information. SEATING IS LIMITED and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. $5 donation requested.
  • April 19 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Family Woodland Hike. Join Rich Cahayla-Wynne on an easy, child-friendly hike in the Garden's woodlands. Learn a bit about the plants, animals and geology around you on a hike designed to fit the group. Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House. Snow/rain cancels. FREE.
  • April 25 (Saturday), 10 am
    Early Spring Wildflower Walk. Early Spring Wildflower Walk. Spring is peeking out everywhere! Join Darlene Nowak in checking out the early bloomers in the Wildflower Garden! Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House. Rain or snow cancels. $5 donation requested.
  • April 26 (Sunday), 10 am
    Butterfly Gardening with Native Plants. Welcome our flying friends into your garden this season. Don Torino of the Bergen County Audubon Society offers an indoor photo presentation on some of the native plants that will invite birds and butterflies into your green space. At the Carriage House Visitor Center. FREE.

May

  • May 1 (Friday), 6:30 pm
    Plant Sale - Members' Preview & Reception. We thank our members each year with an invitation to the special pre-opening to our annual Plant Sale. You'll love the array of unusual specimens! NJBG members only. (Not a member? Become one!).
  • May 2-3 (Saturday-Sunday), 10 am-4 pm
    Plant Sale. Perennials, annuals, vegetables, herbs, trees, shrubs, vines, ground covers, hanging baskets and potted plants. Knowledgeable Master Gardeners will be on hand to offer advice, and the plants are lush and healthy. Come early for the best selection. FREE admission.
  • May 3 (Sunday), 11 am-3 pm

  • May 9-10 (Saturday-Sunday), 12 noon-4 pm
    Lilac Garden Splendor. The Lilac Garden is a large collection of these sweet-scented and prolific spring beauties, in the peak of bloom this time of year. Members of NJBG's Lilac team will be in this part of the Garden to answer any questions you might have. FREE.
  • May 16 (Saturday), 10 am
    Spring Wildflower Walk. Join Darlene Nowak in checking out the many delightful spring bloomers in the Wildflower Garden! Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House. Rain cancels. $5 donation.
  • May 16 (Saturday), 1 pm
    Milkweed Planting with BCAS. As part of a grant project to help the Monarch butterfly, volunteers from NJBG and the Bergen County Audubon Society will join forces to plant milkweed in the Dry Meadow. Milkweed is the Monarch's preferred egg-laying plant, but is disappearing through development. Learn more about the Monarchs and help make them welcome at NJBG. Wear sturdy shoes, bring gloves and small tools if you have them, and meet at the Carriage House. FREE, donations welcome.
  • May 17 (Sunday), 1 pm-3 pm
    Children's Container Gardening Workshop. Join Nancy Cochrane and Master Gardener and educator Olga Newey to explore the fun of gardening. Learn to grow veggies and herbs in different containers; you'll take home what you plant. In the Carriage House. Ages 6 and up; children under 14 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. $10 members, $15 non-members. Reservations required at 973-962-9534; sorry, no walk-ins.
  • May 17 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Family Woodland Hike. An easy, child-friendly hike in the Garden's woodlands, where you'll learn about the plants, animals and geology around you in a hike designed to fit the group. Smaller children may need to be carried. Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House. Rain cancels. FREE, donations welcome.

YOUR GARDEN
Come visit often for a constantly-changing display of color and bloom sure to cheer your heart. The Botanical Garden is open every day from 8 am to 8 pm Garden admission is always free. $5 per New Jersey-registered car parking fee on summer weekends and holidays (weekends, Memorial Day to Labor Day), $7 for out-of-state registered cars. Weekday parking is free.

MANOR TOURS
...are offered on Sunday afternoons, March through November. Knowledgeable docents will introduce you to the architecture and history of beautiful Skylands Manor. Adults: $7; Seniors: $5; Students 13-18: $5; Children 6-12: $3; Under 6: Free. Please check the calendar for exact dates and times.

GIFT SHOP
Sunday afternoons from 12 noon-4 pm, April through December (weather permitting). Great gift ideas, shirts, books, garden supplies, and children's items. Credit cards accepted.

HIKE & BIKE
Always a pleasure on the Garden's many safe and beautiful hiking & biking trails.

FAMILY WOODLAND WALK
Our easy, child-friendly walks one Sunday afternoon each month are a great way to explore nature. Free.

VOLUNTEER IN THE GARDEN
NJBG volunteers help maintain the gardens, give tours, and offer many other public services. To volunteer, inquire at the office. We'd love to have you!

PLEASE REMEMBER...
