NJBG Events

Programs are free unless otherwise noted. Donations are gratefully accepted. For events that require reservations, or for questions, please call the NJBG office at (973) 962-9534.

All events begin or take place at the Carriage House Visitor Center unless otherwise specified.

State Park Parking Fee: On summer Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, there is a State Park parking fee of $5 for New Jersey-registered vehicles and $7 for non-New Jersey-registered vehicles. Oversized vehicles (vehicles that occupy more than one normal parking space, including vehicles with trailers, RVs, etc.) are charged double the normal rate. At all other times, parking is free.

Skylands is a carry-in, carry-out State Park facility. Please carry your trash and litter back out with you and dispose of it properly.

Remember, no pets, picnics, alcohol, balls, frisbees, nor lawn games are permitted in the Botanical Garden.


Fall-Winter 2018

Free Guided Garden Tours - Sundays, 2 p.m., May through October. Steady rain cancels. Meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center and wear comfortable shoes.

November

  • November 4 (Sunday), 11 am-3 pm
    Skylands Manor Tours. NJBG volunteer docents lead visitors on a tour of the architecture and history of Skylands Manor. Fee: $7 adults; $5 seniors and students ages 13-18; $3 ages 6-12; free under 6.
  • November 10 (Saturday), 10 am
    Annual Membership Meeting. All NJBG members and interested parties are invited to attend the Association's Annual Meeting. There'll be a review of last year's activities and a description of plans for 2019. New Board members will also be elected. If you would like to nominate a candidate for the Board of Directors, please contact the NJBG office at (973) 962-9534.
  • November 11 (Sunday), 10 am
    Audubon: Nature Walk. Bergen County Audubon Society will lead a walk through the gardens and fields looking for late fall migrating birds and resident species that will spend the winter here in New Jersey. Meet at the Carriage House. Rain or snow cancels. Free.
  • November 17 (Saturday), 10 am
    Wreath-Making Workshops. An annual tradition at NJBG! In these two workshops you'll learn how to assemble and decorate wreaths to grace your home, using a variety of fresh and dried materials. As you learn, you'll make a wreath to take home with you. Materials provided; bring clippers and any special ribbon or decorations you might wish to use. Reservations required. Fee: $20 members, $25 non-members.
  • November 17 (Saturday), 1 pm
    Wreath-Making Workshops. See above. Fee: $20 members, $25 non-members.
  • November 18 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Family Woodland Hike. An easy hike in the Garden's woodlands, where you'll learn a bit about the plants and animals around you in a hike designed to fit the group. Smaller children may need to be carried. Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center. Rain cancels. Free.
  • November 29-December 2 (Thursday-Sunday)
    Holiday Open House at Skylands Manor. The Manor will be decorated floor to ceiling for "A Country Manor Holiday," our tribute to the many festive celebrations held here when Skylands was a private estate. It's a warm and welcoming start to the holiday season with a totally different look every year! Gift Shop and Holiday Café, too. Click here for more information and Evening Reception tickets.

December

  • December 16 (Sunday), 1 pm
    Family Winter Hike. An easy, child-friendly hike in the Garden's woodlands, where you'll learn a bit about the plants and animals around you in a hike designed to fit the group. Smaller children may need to be carried. Wear sturdy shoes, meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center. Rain cancels. Free.

January 2019

  • January 1 (Tuesday), 1 pm-3:30 pm
    First Day Hike. Start your New Year right on a self-guided family friendly hike in the State Park woodlands at the NJ State Botanical Garden. Weather permitting; you can climb to the Mt. Defiance overlook on the Halifax trail and return, or choose our alternate hike without a climb. This annual event is a joint project of State Park staff and volunteers from the NJBG/Skylands Association and the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. Wear sturdy shoes and weather appropriate clothes, small chil- dren may need to be carried. Meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center at NJBG between 1pm and 2pm. Map and hike directions will be provided at the start. Allow 90 minutes for the hike. Staff will be on the trail for assistance if required. Snow cancels; call 973-962-7031 for info. Free.

YOUR GARDEN
Come visit often for a constantly-changing display of color and bloom sure to cheer your heart. The Botanical Garden is open every day from 8 am to 8 pm Garden admission is always free. $5 per New Jersey-registered car parking fee on summer weekends and holidays (weekends, Memorial Day to Labor Day), $7 for out-of-state registered cars. Oversized vehicles (including trailers and RVs) pay double. Weekday parking is free.

MANOR TOURS
...are offered on Sunday afternoons, March through November. Knowledgeable docents will introduce you to the architecture and history of beautiful Skylands Manor. Adults: $7; Seniors: $5; Students 13-18: $5; Children 6-12: $3; Under 6: Free. Please check the calendar for exact dates and times.

GIFT SHOP
Sunday afternoons from 12 noon-4 pm, April through December (weather permitting). Great gift ideas, shirts, books, garden supplies, and children's items. Credit cards accepted.

HIKE & BIKE
Always a pleasure on the Garden's many safe and beautiful hiking & biking trails.

FAMILY WOODLAND WALK
Our easy, child-friendly walks one Sunday afternoon each month are a great way to explore nature. Free.

VOLUNTEER IN THE GARDEN
NJBG volunteers help maintain the gardens, give tours, and offer many other public services. To volunteer, inquire at the office or call (973) 962-9534. We'd love to have you!

PLEASE REMEMBER...
