Papaveroideae spp.
The poppy is a flowering plant in the family Papaveraceae. It is herbaceous and grown for its color. Most poppies produce edible seeds like the poppy seeds found on bagels. Only one species is the source of opium.
Since WWI and the trench warfare in Flanders, Belgium, poppies have become a symbol of remembrance for soldiers who have died on the battlefield. Wearing of poppies has been a custom since 1924 in the United States.
