First Day Hike at NJBG

First Day Hike. Start your New Year right on a self-guided family friendly hike in the State Park woodlands at the NJ State Botanical Garden. Weather permitting; you can climb to the Mt. Defiance overlook and return, or choose our alternate hike without a climb. This annual event is part of the NJ State Parks “First Day Hike” program, which sponsors hikes all around the state. Wear sturdy shoes and weather appropriate clothes, small children may need to be carried.

Start at the Carriage House Visitor Center at NJBG between 1pm and 2pm to pick up a map and hike directions. Allow about 90 minutes for a good hike.

For serious hikers: 1:30pm. Join seasoned hike leader Don Weise, director of the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, for a special hike up Mount Defiance. Total distance is approximately 2 miles with a vertical climb of about 600 feet. Dress for conditions. Proper footwear required. If all members of the group are willing  and able, Don will extend the hike to a 3-mile, scenic loop. Snow or excessive cold cancels. FREE
